Originally published in 1667, John Milton’s epic poem is renowned for its existential examination of the origins of humanity and its daringness to question God and humanize Satan, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Classics Line.

Written when Milton was in his fifties and disillusioned by the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy in England, Paradise Lost‘s ambivalence towards authority and stance on Christianity is highly debated. Milton’s literary masterpiece centers the story of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Eden, yet sprawls into a vast, epic, and often grotesque poem that spans dramatically across time and space.

About the Author

John Milton (1608–1674) was an English poet, polemicist, scholar, and civil servant whose famous epic Paradise Lost (1667) redefined English literature, alongside his other works such as Areopagitica (1644). Blinded by glaucoma in his 40s, he dictated his literary masterpieces amidst political upheaval and disillusionment, wrestling with themes such as authority, sin, and freedom.
